What Do Data Centers Actually Do?

Data centers store, process, and protect the information that keeps modern life running. They support everything from social media and online banking to streaming movies, AI tools, and emergency services.

Why was this project kept quiet early on?

The project is outside Hubbard city limits and early confidentiality is standard in major developments due primarily to data center customer requirements. Now that core planning is complete, we look forward to continued transparency.

Is this just like a cryptocurrency mining operation?

Cryptocurrency mining operations and hyperscale AI data centers may look similar from the outside, but they are fundamentally different businesses with very different impacts on the community.

A cryptocurrency mine is built to run thousands of identical computers at maximum speed to generate digital currency. These machines produce large amounts of heat and rely on huge walls of high-speed fans to cool them. Most crypto mines pull all their electricity from the public grid, often at very high volumes, and they typically operate in simple metal structures with minimal sound insulation. They also provide very few long-term jobs and often offer limited community benefit.

A data center campus, like the Nexus project in Hubbard, is an engineered industrial facility designed for long-term reliability, environmental compliance, and community partnership. Our data centers use purpose-built buildings, professional noise-reduction design, high-efficiency cooling systems, and long-term infrastructure planning. Nexus is also self-powered, highly water-efficient, and required to follow strict permitting and environmental review. In addition, Nexus brings high-quality jobs, educational partnerships, and direct investment into local emergency services and utilities—while paying full local taxes.

Because the two industries operate completely differently, comparing any Bitcoin mine to the Nexus project in Hubbard is not accurate—it truly is an apples-to-oranges comparison.

Community Impact
Will this project raise local electricity bills?

Nexus intends to generate its own power onsite using natural‑gas generation paired with battery storage and will put excess power onto the grid. Because we do not rely on the local utility grid for operational power, the project will not raise residential electricity rates; unlike other data centers that take power from the grid. Residential power bills are determined by system‑wide utility factors, not by projects that generate their own power, so the data center will not cause local rates to increase.

Will this strain Hubbard’s water supply?

The project has been designed to minimize demand on Hubbard’s existing water resources and also to help expand the community’s long-term water capacity. Most of the water supply for the data center will be captured rainfall. We will capture rain runoff and prevent evaporation using modern technologies.

Our cooling systems will use a combination of captured rainfall, non-potable water, and atmospheric water-generation technology.

We are also partnering with the City of Hubbard to fund the development of a new municipal water well that strengthens the city’s long-term supply, and we are working with the city to improve and upgrade the existing city wastewater treatment facility.

Who will handle emergency response?

Nexus is coordinating closely with the local emergency services district, volunteer fire departments, and county officials. We will provide on‑site training, safety coordination, and equipment support to ensure responders have the tools and familiarity they need.

Will traffic and heavy trucks damage local roads?

A full traffic impact assessment is underway. During construction, heavy vehicles will use designated routes coordinated with the county. We are coordinating with TxDOT on any new traffic impacts.

Jobs & Benefits
How many Construction Jobs will there be?

We anticipate 1,000 to 1,500 construction jobs across a multi-year timeline. As each data center building becomes operational, there will be a need for 100 to 500 long-term employees in well‑paid roles such as security, facilities maintenance, mechanical operations, network support, and administrative positions.

Will Nexus create job‑training programs?

Workforce development is a major priority for us. We are actively exploring partnerships with Hubbard ISD and regional workforce programs to create training pathways with the goal of hiring locally whenever possible.

In short, we want to help create a direct pipeline from Hubbard classrooms to long-term local careers at the Nexus campus.

Environmental Standards
How are you addressing air quality and health concerns?

The facility will operate within applicable air quality and environmental standards and will be subject to all required regulatory reviews and approvals at the federal and state levels before implementation.

Will there be a loud droning noise like other data centers?

Cooling units, generators, and mechanical equipment are placed based on professional noise modelling to ensure sound levels remain within acceptable limits.

Has an environmental study been completed?

Yes. Environmental evaluation began early in the planning process and includes noise surveys, drainage and stormwater reviews, wetlands assessments, air‑quality modeling, and regulatory permitting through TCEQ and other agencies. Additional required studies will be completed before construction begins.

Are there health risks for nearby residents?

All power generation must comply with rigorous state and federal health standards. Operations will be monitored continuously to ensure compliance throughout the life of the facility.
